About:

This is my humble attempt at a simple website. The website is contrived and constructed mostly in the Unix shell at sdf.org. I have chosen this method for its' simplicity and non-distractive format. The goal is to have a minimalistic platform to express my thoughts, keep a small bit of data I find useful accessible online, and to communicate without the intrusion of corporate entities.

RAINY RAMBLINGS

There has been a light rain since yesterday afternoon. I thought that the wetness would reduce the amount of pollen in the air, but my allergies persist. It is quite miserable.

I am spending more time away from corporate social media and have landed here on Sdf.org more often. I'd like to gravitate slowly away from all corporate internet, but it's influence is deep and I have much data on Facebook, Youtube, Google, etc. It is definitely a dependence that I'd like to break eventually.

I find working in a Unix shell more purposeful and productive. There is a learning curve, however, which is perfect, since learning is one of my joys. Without uneccessary distractions, I find that I am writing more. Today, with a light rain trickling down, it is especially pleasant.

WEBSITE STRUCTURE

I feel that, finally, I have set up my website close to how I want it. Without having to think about how to make the pages, navigation, and html code work together to form a neat readable form, I feel I can concentrate on writing more. I have accomplished this with many shortcuts I have made in the shell, mostly aliases that perform multiple commands. For instance, I use the alias "pst" to update this index page. The alias pieces together the different parts of this page and updates the permissions on the server.

I have many subjects that I'd like to begin, however, my focus is not so good. I need to remember to start on step one.

SUNNY AND WARM!

It's quite lovley weather today. The sun is invigorating.

Oliva and I started to rehearse for our readings of Edgar Allen Poe at a local haunt event in May. I am enjoying Poe's mastery of word and language, although it is difficult at times to read out loud. There is much practice needed.

I finally took the time to completely set up and inspect 2 tents that I had picked up from various thrift shops. Both are in great condition with all parts and instructions. I found both easy to set up and tear down. The Hillary tent is larger and should be able to fit my double height queen air mattress for comfortable camping and the other is a Eureka Getaway2, which is smaller and more portable. I like to be flexible. The next planned camping trip is at a music festival in June, but I'd like to squeeze in a one nighter at my favorite spot at Blackwell Horsecamp in the Hoosier National Forest before.

FORGE JOURNAL (cont..)

I ran the forge for aproxximately 3 hours total yesterday. Having fitted a smaller blower to the system, the fire was more efficient and the fuel ecomony was good. I did not feel rushed to perform operations and did not burn any more coal than necessary.

A couple notes:

  • Preparedness for working the hot piece is of the utmost importance. Several times, I wasted a heat because I was not fully prepared to work it when I pulled it out of the fire.
  • The system, as is, takes about 10 minutes to heat back to working temperature after taking a half-hour break.
  • The scroll jig I bought at the fleamarket works well.

Afterward, I mowed the yard and attemped to rig a tent with the tarp I had bought Saturday. I unrolled it only to find that it was 16X24 and not the 16X40 that it had been labeled. I quickly discovered that I did not have the proper rigging to put up the tent. After fighting the wind for a few minutes, I was able to fold the beast back up.

    Improvements:

  • welded a flat piece of steel to the bottom of my anvil to stabilize it. The anvil is a solid retangular piece of steel. I stand it up for good working level.
  • Cleaned the clinker out of the forge.
  • mounted a hot cut on its own tree stump.

    FORGE

Lit the forge for several hours yesterday and this morning - played around with the ratio of rice coal to nut coal. For small projects the mix can run a small fire heart for several hours with minimal fuel. I am happy with the new build of the sideblast forge. It will serve me well for small to medium projects.

    TARPOLOGY AND CANVAS TENTS

I had some old painter's drop canvas laying around and decided to use them for tent camping. They were thin (maybe 8oz) and untreated so they work for good weather not rain. I developed a frame system for the tent from pvc. The system uses arches so the tent is quite roomy and sturdy. I have tested this system several times last year.

This year, I am adding a rain fly/tarp to the system. It will give me more options to camp during rain or wet conditions.

Got up and out early this morning for a fleamarket event downtown called Parking Lot Pickers. Picked up a nice 16X40 tarp for camping or whatever. Also got a coleman camp stove and a huge box of macrame rope for Liv.
